Weather and Clothing Guide While in the Holy Land
Understanding Makkah and Madinah weather through the year and choosing the right clothing so worship stays comfortable and focused.

The weather in Saudi Arabia differs from Indonesia, so proper clothing preparation greatly affects worship comfort. The climate is generally dry with low humidity. In summer (roughly May to September) daytime temperatures can be very high, while in winter (roughly December to February) the air feels cool to cold, especially at night and dawn in Madinah.

In summer, prioritise cotton clothing that absorbs sweat, is loose, and is light in colour. For men, the ihram cloth and light garments help greatly. For women, a loose, breathable robe is more comfortable than hot fabrics. Protect yourself from the sun with an umbrella, sunglasses, and lip balm, and drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration.

In winter, prepare a jacket, sweater, thick socks, a scarf, and layered underclothing. Cold, dry air can trigger coughing or cracked skin, so bring moisturiser and eucalyptus oil. Even when it is cold, the midday sun can still be strong, so easily removable layers are a smart choice.

Note that mosque courtyard floors can be very hot at midday in summer and bitingly cold in winter. Socks help protect the soles of your feet, and slip-on sandals make entering and leaving the mosque easier. Keep sandals in a small bag so they are not mixed up or lost, because losing footwear in extreme weather is quite troublesome.

For worship, wear clean, modest clothing that covers the body as prescribed. Bring several changes of clothing because sweating soils garments quickly, and it is best to have more than one ihram set so you can change. Quick-drying fabrics make hand-washing at the hotel easier. Avoid tight clothing that hampers movement during tawaf and sa'i.

Do not forget protection from the dry air: use a thin mask in crowds to reduce dust exposure, apply nasal moisturising spray if needed, and use skin moisturiser regularly. Those with a history of asthma or allergies should consult about medicines to bring before departure.

Also note the sharp temperature difference between day and night, especially in open areas such as during ziyarah. It may feel warm at midday yet drop sharply after sunset. Therefore, carrying a thin jacket that folds easily into your bag helps greatly even if you depart in summer. Match your footwear to the walking terrain, and always keep spare clothing in your hand luggage in case your suitcase has not yet reached your room.

The key is to match your clothing to your departure season, bring layered gear, and always stay hydrated. With a comfortable body protected from the weather, worship can be performed more calmly, humbly, and with gratitude.
