How to Perform Tawaf and Prayers in Each Circuit
A guide to the seven circuits of tawaf around the Ka'bah, its conditions, recommended acts, and correct guidance on prayers.

Tawaf is one of the pillars of Umrah — circling the Ka'bah seven times. It is one of the most memorable moments for pilgrims because it is performed directly before the House of Allah, the qibla of Muslims worldwide.

Before beginning tawaf, pilgrims must fulfil several conditions. Among them are being free of minor and major impurity — that is, being in a state of ablution — and free of physical impurity on the body and clothing. The awrah must be covered, and the Ka'bah must be circled with it kept on the pilgrim's left.

Tawaf begins from the corner where the Black Stone is located. The pilgrim faces or gestures with the hand toward the Black Stone while saying takbir, then begins walking around the Ka'bah counter-clockwise. One circuit is counted from the Black Stone back to the Black Stone, done seven times.

For men there are two recommended acts in tawaf. First, idhtiba' — baring the right shoulder by placing the ihram cloth under the right armpit. Second, raml — walking briskly with short steps during the first three circuits. Neither applies to women.

Regarding prayers, it must be understood that there is no specific supplication obligatory for any particular circuit. The notion that each circuit has its own fixed prayer has no strong basis. Pilgrims are therefore free to supplicate with any good prayer, make remembrance, recite the Qur'an, or ask Allah in a language they understand.

Nevertheless, there is a recommended supplication between the Yamani Corner and the Black Stone — a request for goodness in this world and the next and protection from the punishment of the Fire. This prayer comes from authentic guidance and may be repeated each time one passes that section.

After completing seven circuits, pilgrims are recommended to head to the Station of Ibrahim to perform a two-rak'ah voluntary prayer if possible, then drink zamzam water. If it is too crowded, the prayer may be performed anywhere in Masjid al-Haram.

By understanding these steps, pilgrims can perform tawaf correctly and with devotion. What matters most is not merely memorising a particular prayer, but presenting the heart, observing good manners, and feeling one's presence before the House of Allah in full servitude.
