Temperatures in Saudi Arabia can be far higher than at home. Simple habits help you stay comfortable and energetic while worshipping.
The weather in Saudi Arabia, especially in summer, can feel far more scorching than in Indonesia. Dry air combined with strong sun makes the body tire and lose fluids more quickly. With the right preparation, you can still worship comfortably.
Meet your body's fluid needs throughout the day. Get into the habit of drinking water regularly, not only when you feel thirsty. Zamzam water available at many points can be used. Cut back on overly sweet or heavily caffeinated drinks, as they can make the body lose fluids faster.
Protect yourself from direct sunlight. Use an umbrella, a wide hat, or cloth to cover your head when out in the open during the day. A light-coloured umbrella is quite effective at reflecting heat. Where possible, schedule outdoor activity in the morning or late afternoon when temperatures are friendlier.
Wear appropriate clothing. Light, sweat-absorbing, light-coloured fabrics help the body feel cooler. For your feet, choose footwear that is comfortable yet still shields your soles from hot floors, especially the mosque courtyard at midday.
Watch for signs of overheating, such as dizziness, weakness, or excessive sweating that suddenly stops. If these appear, seek shade at once, rest, and drink. Do not push yourself; voluntary worship can resume once your body is refreshed.
Make use of the air-conditioned areas inside the mosque and hotel to recover your energy. Schedule enough rest between the rites so your body has a chance to cool down. Carrying a spray bottle of water or wet wipes also helps refresh your face when the air feels very hot.
Beware too of the marble floor in the mosque courtyard, which can become very hot at midday. Walk in shaded areas or on carpeted spots where available, and avoid lingering in the open when the sun is fierce. If you feel overheated, seek shade at once and rest briefly before continuing, so your body stays in good condition.
Just as important, keep your skin and lips moist with a simple moisturiser so they do not dry and crack easily. With these simple steps, hot weather is no longer an obstacle, and you can carry out your worship calmly and full of energy.
